Cambray FC are a local football team from Cheltenham in the UK who have sought to raise funds through various sponsored events for a charity called RED International to build a school for some of the most economically and socially disadvantaged children in the world ….the Dalits of India (formerly known as the ‘Untouchables’)
In 2010 our first event ‘football4dalits’ tried to break the Guinness World Record for the Worlds Longest Football match. Although the record was not broken in the end the funds raised help to establish a new school on land close to a district in Tamil Nadu district, where a predominantly Dalit population live.
This was followed in 2012 by our second event ‘3peaks4dalits’ with 90 people involved in climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in under 24 hours. The funds raised from this event were put to further develop the school which now has a building and around 70 children aged 4-6 now in attendance.
Both these events were blessed by the enormous generosity of sponsors with over £100,000 being raised to help establish and construct this school. Along side this, over 60 children have been individually sponsored to attend GS schools in India.
But our vision was always bigger than this! We wanted to create a school that could house over 400 children from aged 4 upwards, establishing a building that could provide a focus for education in the local community. We wanted God’s grace to be demonstrated in a practical way in helping address many of the social injustices that the Dalits are affected by each and every day.
